MEDIA ISSUE: ONLINE TV

ONLINE TV THE REASON FOR FLAILING NETWORK RATINGS?

It is hardly something that can be ignored, the axing of programmes on Channel 10, over the last few months. The Circle being axed, Everybody Dance Now, and time-cuts for the Breakfast show, with poor ratings for I Will Survive, it only just survived the first season itself.

Article Issue: Where are the TV viewers going? With all the free to air TV and Foxtel and so many internet websites available for viewing TV shows, that maybe Ten is just the fallout from all of the future possibilities.

ABC chief executive Mark Scott suggest, internet downloads and piracy is becoming an epidemic known as ‘Catch-up TV’. It has become a means of actually viewing television, without aid of an actual television.

My view: Is the underlying issue in low TV ratings, merely a missing audience? There are just not enough watching the television and its scheduled content? This is the issue of watching content at your own time, through your own sources. There has been a media frenzy and hype from the U.S programmes makes Australians turn to the internet.

The Australian TV networks have always delayed airing shows with American content for months after being showed in the U.S.  Now as you are seeing on TV the networks are drawing drastic actions in an attempt to fight the war between internet downloads. Network Ten and Seven are airing shows straight after the U.S views it; shows like Homeland on Ten and Grey’s Anatomy on Seven.

I recently came across a new Australian produced web series SYD2030 by a young and up-coming actress Tatjana Alexis. At first it was an assignment for film class but turned in to creating a publishing company known as Cheese on Toast ProductionsThe web series took me by interest as I thought that if the SYD2030 series was aired on commercial television, perhaps there was hope for Australian TV networks after all. Some even called it the new Gossip Girl, the Australian version.

"We decided as a company that our generation was so internet savvy, we produced SYD2030 as a web series. Due to the popularity of the show, as it was on the internet we got a wider audience and it was more interactive, but we would be just as thrilled if it had the opportunity to air it on TV” Tatjana said.

The web-series was even nominated for Best International Web Series in the LA Film, Television & Webisode Festival.

Are we all turning to Internet as a form of television too?

MEDIA ISSUE: TWITTER TROLLS

CHARLOTTE DAWSON THE CATALYST FOR THE LATEST CYBER-BULLYING ANTICS

Charlotte Dawson blaming her breakdown and suicide attempt on social media trolls. Is this valid? How much is the media/public to blame?

Article Issue: An opinion by Jamila Rizvi remarks this issue as "You can blame the people who wrote those horrible things, you can blame Charlotte for fueling the fire by engaging with them, you can blame Twitter for providing a platform for such things to be said, you can blame the Government for not policing social media better… Hell, you can blame the advent of the Internet itself. What is much harder though and where the conversation absolutely MUST go next, is one step further along the thought process from blame – and that, is responsibility".

My view: And he is absolutely right! Someone/something needs to take responsibility and action is required. One solution that will no doubt be offered up, is that social media and networking sites should have more checks and balances to ensure people are held accountable for what they say.

Our current generation is fuelled with new technological advances and gadgets and surround more social media hype than ever. With the use of smart phones and iPads, the apps to Facebook and Twitter, are with you all day long - Not just on your computer at home. This constant attachment to social media links only allows for around the clock social media, bullying and abuse. It is not just pertained within the school grounds any longer, it follows you home.

Charlotte Dawsons' most recent debacle over the Twittersphere and contact with what is known as "Twitter Trolls" catalyses this issue further. Although cyber-bullying has been an unfortunate prescence for sometime, and the reason for many upsetting suicide stories, Charlotte Dawson, as a celebrity figure in Australia, has only catalysed this issue further. It has come to the point where it is so prevelant in today's society that something must be done about cyber-bullying.

BLOG-SPIRATION

BLOGGING AND THE PHENOMENON THAT HAS CHANGED THE ONLINE COMMUNITY

Blogspot, Wordpress, Tumblr, they are all online media outlets that let us create and expand our creative juices and let them flow.

"Thousands have found a voice on the net. From the mundane to the thrilling, the blogging phenomenon has produced some of today's most innovative and engaging writing" (New Kids on the Blog, 2004).

Bloglovin' a site that encaptures the blogosphere of blogs and all of their categories, where an online phenomenon  is quietly taking place. An outlet for writing, for opinions, for style, fashion and photography the choices of what to blog about are endless and people do follow you. You do get an audience.

Jorn Barger first used the term "weblog" on his own website Robot Wisdom in 1997. The term is now used to describe personal websites that offer "frequently updated observations, news, headlines, commentary, recommended links and/or diary entries, generally organised chronologically" (Werbach 2001).

Werbach (2001) further extends that although many websites are frequently updated, "what makes a Weblog a Weblog is that it is organised chronogially and designed for short, frequent updates. In other words, Weblogs represent the online intersection of people and time". This is essentially the difference between a blog and a website page.

TV, radio, newspapes and online news are all a form of news being published for an audience, just as is a weblog. However there are no limits to the creative element of a weblog it is entirely personal to the creator, whether it is for personal use or professional use - It is one huge advantage to the strict outlines of other news forums. A disadvantage is any one can have a blog, information being published on the internet therefore becomes less reliable than ever. Also, anything can be written on a blog, abuse, opinion and infringement and copyright issues.
